Project overview

A closer look.

The project comprised extensive conservation, restoration and remedial works to the historic Old House at St. Aloysius College, Athlone, following significant flood and frost damage to the protected structure.

Working under the direction of the Conservation Architect, PD Contractors undertook the careful repair and reinstatement of damaged floors, ceilings, plasterwork, fireplaces, decorative covings, stonework and a significant 19th-century stained-glass window. Original materials and finishes were retained and restored wherever possible, with appropriate salvaged and specialist materials used where replacement was required.

The works also included the sensitive installation of new building services and the provision of a computer laboratory, carefully integrated within the historic fabric of the building. The project was delivered within a demanding programme, including works within a live school environment, while maintaining the highest regard for the architectural and historical significance of the property.
