A closer look.

The project formed part of the wider Athlone Flood Alleviation Scheme, undertaken to strengthen the town’s resilience to flooding from the River Shannon and its tributaries.

The works comprised significant civil engineering and flood defence infrastructure designed to reduce flood risk and provide enhanced protection to properties, businesses and the local community. Delivered as part of the ongoing flood alleviation programme advanced by the Office of Public Works and Westmeath County Council, the project contributes to the long-term protection and resilience of Athlone.
